I can't say I have an iphone (or smartphone, for that matter), but I guess that would make sense. Did they ever fix position: fixed; elements in mobile Safari? It used to be that they didn't scroll with the page.

You might be able to cheat some with a css and some javascript.
Oh, absolutely you can emulate that behaviour with Javascript, it's just messy and there's very very few people playing on mobile devices, so the gain would appear to be minimal.
Admittedly, there'd probably be more people playing on mobile if it worked well, but that's another story.
