You can add me to the list of those who have found that having something really long does not necessarily guarantee ones access to the hole.

I've got a feeling I'm missing something obvious somewhere.

I've actually either figured it out or found a bug, but can't verify.

I can now see the area inside the poorly lit pit when I click on it, but can't actually check it out due to being full and having -25% stamina

Are you sure? You can enter the Poorly Lit Pit (or at least, parts of it) while full and at -25% stamina.

It appears I can in fact navigate the area, with the exception of areas where assumedly there are encounters with enemies.
