in the gift shop, is the redeem a gift field still supposed to be there? as you get the items immediately i don't see any need for it, or am i missing something?

Yes, if you email someone a gift package instead of sending it directly to another player, they get a gift code with which to redeem the gift, which is the purpose of that field.
