is there any way to set up a method of equipping from the expanded item description?

I guess you'd want all of the actions in the item descriptions too, no? That's not particularly hard to do, I'm curious why you want it though, is it mainly for the non-Inventory screens?

mostly for non inventory screens, although also just as a convenience factor after expanding the description you could decide to sell, sell at market, equip, etc.. without having to close and hit the check box to do so.. 'twould be kinda nice.. IMHO anyway..
