said something about hard mode or some kind of mode. what is that? how would i play like that? do i want to play like that?

Hardcore mode? Once your character reaches level 10, you get the option of playing in hardcore mode when you create your next character. The primary difference is that in hardcore mode, your character's name is shiny red instead of dull blue. The other minor difference is that when you die, that's it, there's no revive option.
